Al subbed with Lazy Does It a few times in the past, but never got into this album, until now because it did not yet exist at the time.
Len has known a few LDI players for several decades, but none longer than Al. When Len was a sophomore at John Marshall High School in Minneapolis, in 1961, Al was his band instructor. They had their next musical encounter many years later, when Len subbed for a band in which Al was a regular. Much to Len's surprise, Al not only recognized him, but even remembered his name. Subsequent encounters have always been enjoyable because Al is not only a fine player, but also a very nice guy.
Al started his teaching career in the late 40s but had to give it up in the early 60s, due to problems with his ears. He then went into counselling, but never stopped playing. Needless to say, he's pretty good at it, after all these years.
Al still plays in several groups around town, and has lead a combo called "Somewhat Dixie" for many years. He also composes and arranges music for various local bands and orchestras.
